Completed parking lot and playground
The Community Center/library parking lot project switched from asphalt to concrete in front of the library, adding two weeks, but should hit the punch-list stage soon. One entrance is still closed, frustrating daily patrons.
Teen Dialogue Project and AI conversations
The library is developing AI guidelines rather than a formal policy, in step with city-wide work and new American Library Association resources. The meeting room policy is also being tightened to prevent split reservations and policy circumvention.
Centennial Park splash pad delays
The splash pad is running about two months behind after the state health department required a redesign so water flows outward from the youth zone, adding a perimeter drain. A Memorial Day opening is unlikely.
Centennial Park Phase 2 Construction
The council accepted the bid and authorized the contract for the splash pad phase of the Centennial Park event complex. City Engineer Bilskemper indicated completion by April 2027.
Community survey for parks and recreation needs
The commission is building a survey to find out what residents want from parks and rec — especially for the new 40-acre park land on the north side. Commissioners will each redline the draft and bring it back November 5.
Library strategic planning process
The library is bringing in consultant Shemeichel Hallman of the Urban Libraries Council November 5–9 for strategic planning, including individual trustee interviews and a community charrette with up to 50 residents.
Library Collection Development Policy
The library's policy on what materials it collects and how it accepts gifts got a refresh. The big change is tighter legal language around donations — the library still won't take donor-restricted funds, but those could happen through a separate contract.
Rec Center playground replacement
The 25-year-old playground next to the library is being replaced. The commission picked a tall, music-themed design that's accessible for kids with disabilities, costing about $252,425 — already budgeted. Installation could happen this fall if the rec center parking lot project wraps up first.
Mural artist solicitation paused after language concerns
A call for mural artists included language giving special consideration to artists of certain demographics, which sparked community complaints and calls to the city. The project is on pause while new procedures are developed before the call is reissued.
StoryWalk book 'My Shadow is Pink' draws both concern and support
A father of four objected to a Story Walk display addressing gender identity and asked the council to look into how content is chosen. Library staff told him the library director makes those decisions; no council action was taken.
Storm-damaged trees in city parks
The board was scheduled to hear about trees damaged by storms in city parks, which affects safety and cleanup needs in areas residents use for recreation.
Cemetery maintenance 28E agreement
The joint city-township cemetery board is dissolving because its structure conflicted with state law, but a new 28E agreement keeps the city funding maintenance while Penn Township trustees appoint volunteers. Longtime board member Erika Wade pledged to keep volunteering.
Dubuque Street Trail Improvements
Shive-Hattery was hired to design trail improvements along Dubuque Street, expanding safe walking and biking routes.
Northside parkland settlement
The council settled a Johnson County lawsuit, securing about 40 more acres of parkland for the city.
Two Parks & Recreation board vacancies
Two seats on the park board are still open. Residents interested in shaping parks and recreation decisions can apply through City Hall.
Two Parks & Recreation board vacancies
Two seats are open and the posted deadline has passed, but the city is still taking applications — contact Tracey Mulcahey at City Hall. The board meets once a month for an hour or less, and new members will help pick a chair and vice chair in August.
Quail Ridge Park parking and trail improvements complete
The parking lot expansion and new trail connections at Quail Ridge Park are finished, just in time for graduation party season. The dog park was regraded by a contractor, and plans call for doubling the parking lot and reconfiguring the park into one large dog area with a new small-dog section.
Hy-Vee Event Center Staffing
The event center is booking big acts like the Gin Blossoms, but the part-time event lead job went unfilled three times at $18.50/hour. The council made it full-time — about $30,000 — to protect the venue's success.
Outdoor pool opening delayed
Concrete work, re-caulking and repainting mean the outdoor pool won't open on Memorial Day Weekend this year — the opening date is still to be determined.
