Riverside Cemetery Digital Walking Tour
The commission is working with cemetery superintendent Ed Lawver to build a digital story map tour of Riverside Cemetery. A winter 2026 launch would let residents and visitors explore Spencer's history at their own pace.
Clay County Fair Photography Contest Display
Winning photos from the HPC-sponsored Clay County Fair photography division are being displayed outside Council Chambers. The commission is also planning how to grow participation in the contest for 2027.
Trail grant applications
The council applied for two grants — federal Recreational Trails and state Transportation Alternatives — committing local match and dedicating the trail to public use and maintenance. If awarded, these bring outside money for new trails.
28E Agreement — School UTVs on City Trails
A new 28E agreement lets Spencer Community Schools use small utility vehicles on city trails, with clearly marked vehicles so staff can identify them. It formalizes what the schools were already doing.
Municipal golf course improvements
20 new carts purchased, plus the cart path overlay project set for October — all funded by golf revenue and hotel/motel tax, no property tax dollars. The council praised the course for being packed all season.
Park Audit and Maintenance Ratings
Board members are rating every city park on maintenance level and will visit each park to score priority, condition, and accessibility. The results will shape how park maintenance dollars get spent.
Pederson Park Painting and Disc Golf Course
A paint donation is letting the Parks Department repaint Pederson Park, and the new disc golf course is nearly ready for play.
18th Street Trail segment construction
The trail project's public hearing is set for July 6, with bidding and an award targeted for early August and completion by late October. The splash pad is taking shape, with underground piping mostly done and concrete work coming.
DeWolf and Stoneybrook Park Consolidation
The board floated eliminating DeWolf Park and moving its equipment to Stoneybrook Park as a consolidation idea.
Future of Earl Page Park
The board weighed what to do with Earl Page Park, which sees little use. Members stressed any decision is permanent — once the park is gone, it isn't coming back — and they want City Council input before making a recommendation.
Riverview Tennis Courts and Dennis Price Courts
The aging, flood-damaged tennis courts at Riverview Park would all be removed, with courts shut down there. The board is considering 2-4 new courts at Dennis Price and 2 pickleball courts at Riverview in the future.
Aquatic Center Leak and Future Improvements
The pool's leaking section is shut off and will be repaired after the season; a bigger conversation about aquatic center improvements comes this fall.
